5-Day Rwanda Birding & Wildlife Experience
Discover Rwanda’s vibrant birdlife and breathtaking landscapes on this 5-day safari designed for nature lovers and birding enthusiasts. This tour combines urban birdwatching in Kigali’s wetlands with wildlife encounters in Akagera National Park, and visits to historically significant sites in Bugesera. You’ll explore a mix of habitats—rivers, lakes, savannahs, and forests—perfect for spotting both rare and common bird species alongside Africa’s iconic mammals.
This journey is ideal for travelers seeking a balanced experience of birdwatching, game drives, and cultural insights, all in a compact and well-paced itinerary.
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, a representative will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may opt for a short Kigali city tour, where you can explore local markets, historic landmarks, or simply relax after your flight.
After breakfast, you’ll head to Nyabarongo wetlands, a bird-rich ecosystem located on the outskirts of Kigali, for your first guided birding session. Expect sightings of kingfishers, herons, and papyrus-dwelling species.
In the late morning, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the King’s Palace Museum to gain historical and cultural context. In the afternoon, continue birding around Nyarutarama artificial lake, a hidden gem for spotting urban and migratory birds.
After breakfast, depart for Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah park and a haven for both birds and big game. Upon arrival, enjoy an introductory game and birding drive through a landscape of open plains, wetlands, and acacia woodlands.
Look out for key species such as the papyrus gonolek, red-faced barbet, Tabora cisticola, and broad-tailed warbler, alongside giraffes, buffaloes, and hippos.
Today begins with an early morning game and birding drive, offering chances to spot savannah birds and elusive wildlife like elephants, lions, and leopards. As the sun rises, bird activity increases—watch for raptors, bee-eaters, and lapwings.
After brunch or an early lunch at the lodge, begin your return journey to Kigali, arriving by evening.
After breakfast, travel to Bugesera region, south of Kigali, for your final birding session. This area offers a tranquil rural setting with wetlands and open fields—ideal for spotting weavers, sunbirds, and raptors.
Visit the Ntarama and Nyamata Genocide Memorials, powerful sites that reflect Rwanda’s resilience and history. Enjoy lunch in Kigali before your transfer to the airport for departure.
